The Modern Enduring Relevance of Walt Whitman
So, I recently re-read "Leaves of Grass" by Walt Whitman. It felt so good to sit back and not only read something so familiar, but to immerse myself into something that actually looked to find the best in people and the world. It really made me think about how Whitman's work should be revisited so we could inspire a whole new generation of free thinkers.
Walt Whitman was such an iconic figure in American literature and it's hard to believe, "Leaves of Grass" was published in 1855 and is just as powerful today as it was in its infancy. His approach to writing was so innovative for the time celebrating the best of individuality, democracy, and nature. His work is incredibly relevant today in a world that is so divided and in need of a spiritual awakening.
Whitman put an emphasis on self-expression which is a trait that should be celebrated in today's modern world. In a society so heavily influenced by social media and digital platforms the world is crying for authenticity which is what Whitman brings. His belief in the inherent worth of every individual would be echoed today in every movement advocating for inclusion and diversity. He famously stated, " I contain multitudes" what better way to encourage others to embrace their many faces and identities. While the world grapples with issues of identity and belonging, Whitman and his work serve as a constant reminder of the complexity and beauty that is the human experience.
Whitman had a gift of vividly describing the natural world urging us to find solace in the meaning of our environments. In addition, he was the deepest advocate for democracy and equality. In a world where it feels like democracy is fleeting his principles would shape global discourse. The brilliance of Whitman is that his poetry followed his belief that writing should mirror the democratic ideals of freedom and inclusion. He was a willing voice for a marginalized population. Whitman's ever hopeful vision for an inclusive world encourages everyone to engage and recognize the power of collective actions. In a society so divided and suffering from polarization, his work is a reminder of the importance of shared humanity and unity.
On a selfish note, Whitman's innovative poetic style famous for its free verse and fluidity has influenced generations of writers including this one. While the world thrives and seeks fresh forms of communication his style encourages experimentation and creativity. The spirit in Whitman's poetry of breaking boundaries and expressing truths inspires leagues of creators today whether it be in poetry, content creation or journalism. His belief in the power of language is immense.
Not to be forgotten is Whitman's exploration of love, the complexities of relationships both platonic and romantic. His non-traditional expressions of acceptance and love challenged norms found in society and encouraged what would become an open dialogue about connection. He grounded discussions of love in a legacy that transcended boundaries.
Walt Whitman should be required reading. His groundbreaking work even in 1855 reflects our contemporary lives. His work enriches the understanding of the human experience while challenging us to live our most authentic life. Whitman's words continue to be transformative, encouraging us to embrace our own multitudes while striving for inclusiveness and compassion.
