The Virtues Of Elvis Costello

Elvis Costello, was born Declan Patrick MacManus, he is an icon whose work transcends genres, generations, and geographies. Starting from his punk rock beginnings to his fusion of classical, jazz and everything in between. His long career is a testament to an artistic vision and versatility that has led to an enduring relevancy.

One of the defining characteristics of Costello is his lyrical prowess. He weaves intricate stories and social commentary into his songs which often sets him apart from his contemporaries. His songs are filled with vivid storytelling, life observations and societal commentary which continues to keep him relevant even decades after the start of his career.

Costello has been unparalleled in his attempt to master a variety of genres. Debuting with his punk rock attitude and style dating back to the 1970’s he began transitioning through masterful phases of country with his song, “Almost Blue”, then more classical influences with, “Il Sogno” and he challenged the music world again with amazing jazz influences on, “The Juliet Letters” or the “Brodsky Quartet”. This may be the hallmark of his career, being able to master a wide scope of musical landscapes.

Elvis Costello is not only daring in musical choices his innovative sound has often seen him at the forefront of music. His work with the Attractions saw his musical talents push the boundaries of the early punk movement, while navigating the early years of new wave music. His passion for pushing the envelope of music demonstrated his constant sonic evolution. This afforded him numerous opportunities to collaborate with music’s biggest stars through partnerships with Burt Bacharach, and Paul McCartney. Constantly bringing out new dimensions of artistry.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of witnessing Costello in any form whether that be solo efforts, with the Attractions or The Imposters the shows are legendary for their energy and unpredictability. He has a charisma that lights up an audience while keeping them on the edge of their seats.

Elvis Costello’s music is powerful, poignant, social and political. Perhaps that’s why Costello himself has become a cultural icon. His style and artistic integrity has influenced countless musicians that you’ve heard of and even more that you haven’t. Personally, I see a deep influences of Costello in the Brooklyn band, The Hold Steady. From their lyrics to their sound there are clearly traces of the “Angry Young Man” in their music. He may be one of the last surviving musical virtuosos left. For you newcomers it’s hard to suggest a starting point in your listening journey because everything is so good. Perhaps starting with, “Less Than Zero” from the My Aim Is True album. That marked what might have been the true birth of Costello as an artist. It’s a track that has a great punk sensibility but also shrewd observations. For those who fancy themselves as activists it has to be, “Oliver’s Army”. It's a protest song so intelligent some people fail to realize it’s a protest song. It’s a must for any new fan. Hopeless romantics are covered here too with a tortured tale of tormented romance in, “I Want You” from the album Blood and Chocolate. It's a song that is rageful yet tells the story of how desperate in love one can be. If you’re reading this consider this your invitation to musical enlightenment to the man who uttered the words, “What’s so funny ‘bout peace, love and understanding”. Things the world could really use right now.
